Yes and no. Officially, Netflix has not yet announced the renewal of the series for a second season, however, the actor Matthew Modine said in an interview that the series will have a second season. The history of copyright series from Netflix, we know that it is very unlikely that a series produced by the company is not renewed at least until a second season. The renewal is even more likely when the series is a success - both public, as critical - as is the case of Stranger Things.
But it should not be long before the renewal is officially confirmed.
When will debut the season 2?
The first season was released on July 15th, 2016. Therefore, considering that the series is renewed, the second season is expected to reach only half of 2017. The one year cycle is the standard in the TV series, and those produced by Netflix follow this pattern.
The season 2 will be continuation of the first season?
The actor who plays Dr. Brenner in Stranger Things, Matthew Modine - the same that confirmed the renewal of the series for the second season - confirmed in an interview that the production was designed in a serial format and not miniseries.
Ross Duffer, one of the twin brothers responsible for creation of the series, commented:
''About the Upside Down, we have a 30-page document that explains what he means, where the monster came and because there are no more monsters - we have all these things that we didn't have time to enter in the first season, or we do not think we should enter on the first season because of all this tension with Will.''
It can be argued, therefore, that the next season will be a continuation of the first season history, not an original story by season - as is the case of some series such as American Horror Story. Ross Duffer full:
''If people respond well to this series and we have the opportunity to continue it, we have had some initial discussions of what direction to take. If we have a second season, we reveal more details of this 30-page document, but still want to keep the story from the perspective of our original characters.''
Mike Buffer also explained details about the future of the series:
''We wanted to do some things that [first] season. We didn't want to do the same thing as The Killing. We wanted to solve the main problem of Will have disappeared in the first season. In this sense, it's like an eight-hour film. But we don't answer all the questions at the end of the season - certainly there are unresolved issues. The hope is that [the end] is satisfactory but there is some space, and people respond well, we return to this world. But if we go back, it will be as a result of a new season.''
After all, what can be explored in the second season?
Although the first season was closed "plump" the frame parts have been left open, probably targeting a potential return of the series. Which can then be the themes for the second season? If you haven't seen all season, please avoid the section below. Contains Spoilers.
1. The life of Eleven after her disappearance.
The first season ends with the disappearance of Eleven, a kind of sacrifice to destroy the monster. But she really died? There is what appears when the Hopper delegate leaves some waffles and some Christmas food for her in a box in the forest. If she's still alive, no doubt will be explored in the second season.
2. Continuation of Will's history.
What will happen to Will after his return from Upside Down? As we have seen in the last scene of the series, he is not well even after one month of their rescue. What are the consequences? After all, throwing up monsters doesn't seem the most normal thing in the world.
3. The monster of Upside Down.
Okay, we know that Eleven destroyed the monster at the end of the series. But we don't know much about those monsters. It was just one? There are several? Where they came from? As they are transported between the dimensions? This is undoubtedly the key point of next season.

While 2017 is not here, unfortunately, we can only wait.
